Introduction
| The Art and Design department at The William Allitt School aims to give each individual student the opportunity to achieve their full potential. The rich and diverse nature of the subject allows students to develop as learners, as leaders and within all aspects of life. Following the guidelines of the New National Curriculum learners are encouraged to experiment with a wide range of media, processes and techniques. |

Independent Learning
Students grow in confidence as they learn to express their moods, emotions and thoughts in visual forms. We encourage students to develop as independent, autonomous learners engaging in both group and individual projects. Learners are encouraged to take creative risks within their artwork, develop curiosity and importantly reflect upon their own
progress.
Contextual Studies
Across both Key Stages, students study a wide range of Artists, Designers and Craftspeople, developing a critical understanding of both traditional and contemporary artworks. It is important at The William Allitt School that students develop an understanding of artworks from different cultures and contexts. Students contribute to classroom discussion, questioning the meaning and authenticity of a variety of art forms through the ages. Because of this, students are able to create personal and thoughtful artwork responding to a variety of starting points and topics confidently. Lessons within the Art Department are varied and interesting; students are encouraged to create a ‘gallery space’, working on the floor as well as on tables. Students often rotate the classroom in order to assess and evaluate the work in the room.
Student Voice
Student voice is currently being developed within the Art Department to ensure that staff and students within it are working together to achieve the school’s vision. Our student panel, class straw poles and student questionnaires are currently being organised to ensure that we are listening and learning as a collective.
Student of the
Month
At The William Allitt School we celebrate achievement, taking every opportunity to recognise the progress in our students.
