Art & Design Courses

GCSE Fine Art

What will I learn?

The Edexcel course covers a range of different aspects of Fine Art; specialising in drawing, painting and photography. In Year 10 students create their own sketchbooks and work on a series of projects including ‘Mechanic vs. Organic’, ‘Growth and Decay’ and ‘Similarities and Differences’. Students develop skills in using a variety of materials and learn to develop ideas towards a final piece. Students have the opportunity to develop their knowledge of artists and designers on an exhibition visit during the spring term.

Towards the end of Year 10 students start their controlled assessment (which counts as 60% of their GCSE grade). This project involves students responding to a starting point and developing a portfolio of work based around this. Students sit their first examination at the beginning of Year 11 and are required to produce a final piece in a 2 day period (10 hour period). In the second half of Year 11 students sit the final project (which counts as 40% of their GCSE grade). Students sit their final examination at the end of Year 11 and are once again required to produce a final piece in a 2 day period (10 hour period)

BTEC Art

What will I learn?

This Edexcel course is a vocational option which allows students to work within a structured framework and carry out more controlled projects. Examples of these may include; ‘Working in the style of an artist/designer’ or ‘Creating a CD cover based on Abstract forms’. We aim to cover a broad range of materials and techniques in order to develop student’s skills in creating artwork. Students are not required to sit an exam and the qualification is currently 100% based on coursework.
