Department Overview
The Design & Technology department aims to develop skills and understanding to solve design problems creatively and competently. The underlying Design Process is taught as a logical problem solving method of working through a range of projects throughout the following subjects;
-
Food – working with ingredients and cooking equipment
-
Resistant Materials – working with wood, metal and plastic materials, using hand and machine tools and electronics.
-
Graphics – working with drawing equipment, paper and card
-
Textiles – working with fabrics by hand and machine
-
CAD/CAM (Computer Aided Design/Computer Aided Manufacture) and other ICT skills are taught throughout all Technology subject areas, but with a particular focus in Graphics
Design & Technology is an exciting and diverse subject, and we expect pupils to get actively involved in their projects, completing purposeful homework and developing an interest in Design & Technology in the world outside of School.
Key Stage 3
Year 7 and Year 8 students will spend 19 weeks studying each of the design technology
subjects where they will spend time developing and building their skills. A
full list of the current projects can be found on the KS3
Technology page.
At the end of Year 8 students get the opportunity to choose 3 design technology options to study in Year 9. Students will spend 12 weeks in each of the 3 subjects, developing and building their design and technology skills.
