Department Overview
English at The William Allitt encompasses the study of Language, Literature, Drama and Media Education.
We set high expectations for all students to achieve their full potential and will challenge, encourage and support them throughout their time in school.
The department is staffed by eight fully qualified English teachers.
Key Stage 3
English
Year 7 English is taught in mixed ability
form groups as part of the Opening Minds curriculum. Year 8 students are also taught in their mixed ability form groups.
Students are 'set' in ability groups in Year 9 and then 're-setted' for GCSE courses in Year 10 and Year 11.
GCSE English
The majority of students in Year 10 and 11 are entered for both English
Language and English Literature GCSE examinations. A small number of students who find English
Literature very difficult will be entered for the English GCSE.
Extra Activities
Besides covering the demands of the KS3 curriculum and the examination criteria at KS4, we aim to offer extra-curricular activities for young people to enjoy. These include Theatre visits, workshops, visiting authors, public speaking competitions and activity days.
The department works very closely with the school librarian as fostering a love of reading is at the heart of all we do.
