Applications
The internet is full of websites offering free application software that cover many different aspects of computing.
There are far too many for us to list here but we have picked out a small selection which we think you will find useful.
A few of these applications are used in school and may also be needed to carry out homework tasks - these have been marked as ESSENTIAL and we certainly recommend that you download these.

| Audacity - ESSENTIAL |

Audacity is probably the best free sound editor around. Audacity can record and play sounds and import and export WAV, AIFF, MP3, and OGG files. Edit your sounds using cut, copy, and paste features. You can mix tracks and apply effects to your recordings. Built-in effects include bass boost, wah wah, and noise removal. Audacity is used in ICT for Years 9, 10 and 11. Download

FreeMind is a free mind-mapping application that you can use for planning just about anything. A mind map is a diagram used to represent words, ideas, tasks, or other items linked to and arranged around a central key word or idea. Mind maps are used to generate, visualize, structure, and classify ideas, and as an aid to studying and organizing information, solving problems, making decisions, and writing. Download

GIMP (short for the GNU Image Manipulation Program) is a free software raster graphics editor. It is primarily employed as an image retouching and editing tool and is freely available in versions tailored for most popular operating systems. In addition to detailed image retouching and free-form drawing, GIMP can accomplish essential image editing tasks such as resizing, editing, and cropping photos, photomontages combining multiple images, and converting between different image formats. GIMP can also be used to create basic animated GIF images. Download

Google SketchUp is a free, easy-to-learn 3D-modeling program with a few simple tools to let you create 3D models. You can add details, and textures to your models and design with dimensional accuracy. You can place your finished models in Google Earth, share them with others by posting them to the 3D Warehouse or print hard copies. Google SketchUp is used regularly in Design & Technology lessons. Obviously, these are not the latest versions of the Serif applications but provide a fantastic amount of functionality and all for free. The project comprises a simple programming language that gathers inspiration from the original BASIC programming language; a modern and attractive programming environment; and rich, extensible libraries.
